About USA Permits

USA Permits helps homeowners, renters, and contractors answer one simple question before starting a project: do you need a permit for this, and where?

What We Do

Instead of digging through municipal code PDFs or calling a building department and waiting on hold, USA Permits organizes permit requirements by city and project type — fences, decks, sheds, pools, roofing, additions, and more — in one consistent, easy-to-scan format:

  • Whether a permit is typically required — yes, no, or it depends
  • The responsible building or planning department
  • Fees, size and height limits, setbacks, and required documents, where published
  • A direct link to apply or to the official department page

How We're Different

We build every page from official sources only — city, county, and state government websites, municipal codes, and official permit portals. We don't publish a page until we've found at least one real, verifiable source for that city and permit type, and we show when the information was last verified. If we don't have reliable data for a city yet, we say so instead of guessing. See our Editorial Policy & Methodology for exactly how we source and verify information.

Coverage

We're continuously expanding coverage across all 50 states, prioritizing the largest and fastest-growing cities first, then working outward. If your city isn't covered yet, check back — or contact us at [email protected] to let us know it's needed.

A Starting Point, Not a Substitute

USA Permits is an independent informational resource, not a government agency, and not a substitute for confirming requirements directly with your local building department before you build. See our Disclaimer for details.
